Firearm holsters come in many sizes, shapes, materials, and levels of retention. There’s 3 basic categories of holsters: duty, concealment, and sporting. The type of holster used depends on the situation in which they are used.

Security and law enforcement officers who carry their guns openly generally use what is called a retention holster which incorporate one or more levels of retention. Straps or flaps hold the firearm in place and prevent the officer from being disarmed. The more retention the holster offer makes it more difficult for someone to remove the firearm from your holster.

Holsters that are meant to be incognito and easily hidden are called Concealment holsters. The most common concealment holsters are known as the belt and paddle holster which are generally compact, lightweight and designed to be worn under clothing. Other concealment holsters include the shoulder holster, ankle holster, pocket holster with many variations of each.
